Course Description

This course describes the most popular multimedia file formats (ISO's MP4 and M4A, 3GPP, Microsoft's ASF and Adobe's SWF, FLV and F4V formats), and how they can be used for both storage and streaming of multimedia content. Hands-on exercises provide practical experience with file formats. Exercises include:

  • Creating MP4 and ASF files
  • Analyzing and inspecting files with GUI-based file analysis tools
  • Editing files

Course Benefits

Effective use of audiovisual material can significantly improve communications (both internally between management and employees, as well as externally with customers and vendors), reduce costs, improve training and accelerate learning curves, and improve security. Realizing these benefits depends on efficient mechanisms for storage, retrieval, editing and navigation of content. Participants will learn to distinguish between competing formats, enabling them to make an informed choice when deciding which feature sets are most appropriate for their needs and objectives.

Participants Will Learn to

  • Distinguish among the various multimedia file formats
  • Produce multimedia files with metadata
  • Inspect file contents with GUI-based file analysis tools
  • Edit multimedia files
  • Evaluate and compare different file formats and match their features against their needs

Who Should Participate

Producers, editors, aggregators and consumers of audiovisual content will all benefit from this course. This includes software developers and animators as well as IT staff responsible for storing, serving, editing and managing audiovisual assets.
